The HK VP9 pistol has been around long enough to prove that it is a reliable, accurate and durable pistol. VP9 combines polymer frame and impact technology. I have been a fan of the HK P30 for a long time. The HK P30 is accurate, reliable and beloved by HK. The first shot of the HK P30 double action was the logical starting point for the VP9 project. The frame is almost identical to the HK P30 and the pistols share the same magazine. Side panels, not just handles, are removable and replaceable. This means that everyone will be able to get a good pen. The geometry and texture of the frame provide excellent ergonomics.

No weapon offers a better design for combat use. Although the VP9 is similar to the P30, the P30 double action first shot requires the trigger finger to be on top of the trigger and behind. The VP9 differs from the P30 in that the VP9 is a percussion pistol. There is a safety lever on the trigger - modeled after the Glock - but otherwise the VP9 is a familiar push-and-fire pistol. A trigger is more like a single action than a double action. The trigger breaks at 6.0 pounds - perfect for most of us. Reset is fast. During a blank fire, a reset of the trigger was heard when the shutter was pressed.
I've been doing this for a long time, but the trigger took some getting used to. At first there were average results. After all, after focusing on the trigger and a lot of blanks, I have a gun that I can shoot and hit better than any other percussion gun. The combination of grip, trigger mechanism and good combat sights gives excellent results. For those who want to practice, VP9 is fine. The quick reset allowed fast and accurate double taps and strikes.

The VP9 is one of the most comfortable 9mm pistols to shoot. The low bore axle results in less muzzle rotation and the recoil is straight back. Recoil was greater than either the CZ 75 or Browning Hi Power steel frame simply because of the VP9's lighter weight. For example, when shooting the Hornady 124-grain XTP, the difference in recoil with the new American Gunner 124-grain XTP +P was noticeable. I prefer the +P carry load and will practice to get the hang of it, but recoil is an important factor, although less so for experienced shooters.
Most of the shots were hand loads, with which I had good results. The combination of a 124 grain Hornady FMJ bullet and enough WW231 powder for 1090 fps worked in every carbine and pistol I tested it in. In the VP9 test for this report, I fired a whopping 400 shots. (This was also an important practice with the personal carrying of weapons.) The results were excellent.
The VP9 is designed to hit the target quickly, provide good combat accuracy and fast follow-up shots. It was delivered. I shot a lot of SIG Sauer 115-grain FMJ and one load of V Crown JHP with good results. I have also fired several 124 grain Hornady XTPs and the new 124 grain XTP +P with excellent accuracy.
25 yards is a long range for a pistol, but accurate shooting from a solid bench gives some indication of the quality of the pistol and its inherent accuracy potential. I shot one 2.5" group, most of which are slightly larger. With quality ammunition, the VP9 delivers superior accuracy. Overall, the VP9 is a weapon that is worth the price. Performance is outstanding and pride in ownership is a plus. While there are cheaper handguns with good reliability, the HK is worth the price.

The Heckler & Koch VP9 (known as the SFP9 in Europe and Canada) is a polymer-framed semi-automatic pistol. The designation VP in the name refers to Volkspistole, which translates as "people's pistol".
9 means designation of caliber 9 mm. VP9 is HK's third trigger pistol. VP9 variant, VP40 chambered in .40 S&W; VP40 is known as SFP40 in Europe and Canada.
According to manufacturer Heckler & Koch (HK), the gun was in development for over four years before its release in June 2014.
It was originally developed at the request of the Bavarian State Police to replace the HK P7. As HK has a long history with striker pistols, they decided to update their line with a new striker system that gives their pistols a single-stage, non-tearing trigger feel.

Both the VP9 and VP40 use Heckler & Koch's ergonomic grip design that includes three interchangeable straps and six side panels that allow the pistol to fit any hand size.
The molded finger grooves at the front of the pistol grip also instinctively position the shooter's hand for optimal shooting.
Despite being influenced by other HK models, the VP9 has several innovations of its own. Management is completely dual. There is a slide on both sides of the frame and the magazine release can be easily activated by both left-handed and right-handed shooters.
A new feature is the threaded HK charging mounts. These are simple components that fit on each side of the back of the bolt and provide a better grip for tilting the bolt back. The reload supports fast reloading and makes the VP9 easier to handle for shooters with a weak hand. The VP pistols use the same steel magazines as the Heckler & Koch P30 in 15 and 10 round capacity configurations.
