FORT HOOD, Texas - Carriers with the 96th Transportation Company, 553rd Combat Support Battalion, 4th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) sometimes have to travel great distances to accomplish a mission.

That was the case when Leopard Battalion units helped Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division transport an M1A2 Abrams tank to San Antonio, Texas.

The Military Warriors Support Foundation teamed up with many other organizations to honor wounded warriors and the military during the recent PGA Golf Tournament. 2-8 Cav units participated in this event and displayed their equipment.

96. trans. Co., one of the few heavy transport companies in the United States, provided a team of eight soldiers and two of the largest land vehicles in the transport unit to tow the tank.

The transport of heavy equipment or HET is the primary tool for 96. The Vrakoviště vehicle also joined the column. A breaker is used to collect equipment such as tanks in the event of an accident.

"The side-by-side cooperation of the two units was instrumental in meeting the display requirement," said Sgt. Jeffery O'Millian, the operations sergeant who helped secure the convoy. "The team has taken all necessary precautions for the safe delivery of the tank."

The soldiers said they enjoyed a nice change of pace from their normal daily tasks. The convoy took six hours in both directions.

"It was like a breath of fresh air to be able to have a convoy mission without combat," said Sgt. Jesse Newman, Junkyard Operator and Mechanic. “Our regular combat zone rotations are eighteen hours and spent equipment.

"We put on a civilian display of the best equipment in the world, the Abrams tank," said Staff Sgt. Anthony Eka, 2-8 Cav. "We've given the San Antonio community a realistic view of first-class amenities." Empty (tractor) 18598 kg / 20657 kg. 5th wheel load (at GCW) 20411 kg / 20884 kg. GCWR 104961 kg / 108461

The Oshkosh M1070 is a US Army tank transporter. The main purpose of this combination for the US military is to transport the M1 Abrams tank.

They are available in A0, A1 and M1300 configurations. The M1070 is mated to a DRS Technologies M1000 semi-trailer. The M1300 is a US Army Europe specific derivative designed to be legal in Europe and work with a different trailer.

The M1070 is also used to transport, deploy and evacuate armored personnel carriers, self-propelled artillery, armored bulldozers and other heavy vehicles and equipment of all kinds.

Variants and derivatives of the M1070 have been produced or are available, including the M1070F

To meet the US Army's requirements for transporting the M1 Abrams main battle tank (MBT), Oshkosh Truck Corporation, now Oshkosh Defse, designed the M1070. A contract was awarded for 1,044 M1070s and production began in July 1992. The contract included an option for 522 additional units.

The final US Army contract for the original A0 variant called for 195 vehicles. These were delivered between March 2001 and March 2003. Deliveries of A0 variants to the US military totaled 2,488.

After the first two separate contracts awarded in 2004, Oshkosh Truck rebuilt service-worn M1070s. They have been restored to original build standard and come with zero miles/zero hours and a full one year warranty. The US Department of Defense cost per vehicle was approximately 75% of the cost of new production vehicles. A total of 1,009 A0 HETs were reset and returned to service.

The M1070E1 was developed in the mid-1990s in cooperation with the US Army as a possible Technology Insertion Program (TIP) for the M1070. An evaluation was carried out and a report submitted. No orders have been placed.

In March 2008, the U.S. Army awarded Oshkosh Defense a more than $11 million single-source (Phase 1) contract to begin development and initial production of the next-generation HET. Phase II involved production verification testing. In July 2009, Oshkosh was awarded a $9.4 million contract modification to begin endurance and performance testing of the HET A1 at the Yuma Proving Ground.

In October 2010, Oshkosh was awarded the first order to supply the M1070A1 HET. This order was valued at over US$440 million and required over 1,000 vehicles, with the first vehicles entering the market in December 2010. The M1070A1 entered service in 2011. Production ended in August 2014 with a total of 1,591 new vehicles. Although the US Army was believed to want to continue production of the HET A1 through 2017, the award was not made. In July 2016, the US Army announced that it wanted to use 2016 funding to begin a technical study on the E-HET to replace the current M1070A1 and M1000 semi-trailer.

In March 2017, Oshkosh was awarded a $15,080,369 foreign military sales contract for M1070A1 heavy equipment transporters to Jordan and Oman, with associated testing, spare parts and training. The estimated date of completion of the contract was December 2018.

Tender W56HZV-17-R-0021, announced in February 2017, with responses until April 2017, will result in a firm-price contract for 46 M1070A1s for Egypt.

In July 2017, following a June 2017 congressional report under call number W56HZV-17-R-0167, the US Army released a procurement market study for the Heavy Equipmt Transporter Urban Survivability Kit (HUSK). In May 2013, an acquisition decision memorandum authorized the US Army to develop and acquire armored interchangeable cabs for the M1070A1, leading to the HUSK. The HUSK's survival features are said to include energy-absorbing seats, floating floors, floor mats to mitigate the blast, and an automatic fire suppression system.

HUSK armor and survivability testing took place at the Aberde Proving Ground throughout 2016. A decision on a government or industrial contract for production was expected in fiscal year 2018. In late 2020, HUSK was producing the Rock Island Arsal- Joint Production and Technology Cter. The numbers involved have not been released.

The three-year Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicle (FHTV) 4 contract extension awarded to Oshkosh by the U.S. Army in May 2021 technically allows for the delivery of new and upgraded M1070 HETs along with HEMTT and PLS trucks and trailers.

The M1300 is the M1070A1 that the US Army converted for use in Europe. The need for the M1300 officially emerged after US Army Europe (USAREUR) issued an Operational Requirements Statement (ONS) for the transport capabilities provided by the M1300, which was confirmed by Army Headquarters in April 2017. From that month to September 2017, the Heavy Tactical Vehicle product manager developed several actions that included developing and purchasing a new tractor, leasing tractors outside the US, or "upgrading" the existing fleet of M1070A1 HET tractors.

In December 2017, the Military Requirements Review Board approved the request. In January 2018, the service ordered the purchase of 170 M1070A1 HET motor tractors with the designation "rebaseline" and the designation M1300.

The request for the M1300 was based on the need to transport heavier loads in Europe while meeting European Union (EU) standards. Estimated payloads for the M1300 and trailer were set at a minimum of 82 tons and up to 90 tons (74,389 to 81,
